Taku

TAKU
Age: 16
Year: Sophomore, Class A
Story: Magenta

Taku is a divided person. His outward attitude is very different from his narrative inside voice; At a very early age, he learned that being intelligent rarely has positive results among a young boy's peers. He feels that thinking has always gotten him into trouble, so he has developed for himself a gruff, thug-like attitude. As a result, though, he has never been good at translating his more sophisticated thoughts into words or actions, so there is a degree of helplessness to him.
Taku attends Swanson-Windhill Academy on a scholarship for sports (he is on the track team), but he unexpectedly holds his own in academics and is able to test his way into Class A (highest level), where he meets Steven (another example he cites of his intelligence getting him nowhere good). Though he would rather be unnoticed, Steven always finds ways to unwittingly make him look like a loser. If something seems wrong to him, he wants to put it right, so he becomes oddly consumed with the desire to discover Steven's gender. It ends up, sadly, being one of the few things he is passionate about.
He can't afford to live in the dorms, but he does rent a small apartment close to the school.
Much to his chagrin, his desire to make things right eventually overrides his desire to disassociate himself with Steven's Weirdos, and drives him to attempt to help them through their bizarre problems.
